Hajj Pilgrims Pass Away During Hajj 2024 this year, a tragic incident resulted in the deaths of 16 pilgrims. The Hajj, which is one of the five pillars of Islam and draws millions of Muslims from around the world to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, saw these unfortunate losses amid the rigorous and spiritually significant rituals.
According to officials, the cause of death for most of the pilgrims was related to health complications exacerbated by the extreme heat and physical demands of the pilgrimage. Temperatures during this year’s Hajj reached record highs, posing severe risks to the elderly and those with preexisting health conditions.
Saudi authorities have expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and are working to provide necessary support. Measures have been taken to ensure the safety and health of all pilgrims, including enhanced medical services and emergency response teams throughout the pilgrimage sites.
Despite this tragic event, the majority of pilgrims were able to perform their rituals without incident. The Hajj is known for its intense and spiritually enriching experience, requiring pilgrims to complete a series of rites including Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba), Sai (walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah), and standing at Arafat.
This year’s Hajj saw significant attendance as it is one of the first to return to full capacity following the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The pandemic had severely limited the number of attendees in the past few years, but 2024 marked a significant return to normalcy for the annual pilgrimage.
Two Malaysian Pilgrim, Mohd Zahir Ismail age 58 year old Malaysian citizen, passed away on May 29, 2024, while performing Tawaf at the Grand Mosque in Makkah. Another person Sadiah, 72 years old pilgrim from Kubang Pasu, Kedah, passed away during the Hajj in 2024 due to a ruptured blood vessel. She was rushed to a hospital in Makkah after experiencing severe symptoms but unfortunately did not survive.

These deaths are part of a larger trend, with cardiovascular diseases being the most common cause of death during the Hajj, accounting for 66% of all deaths.
